NATO Maritime Group 1 (
#SNMG1) forces conducted a scheduled port visit in New York Friday, Aug. 30, to Tuesday, Sept. 3. The visit gave Allied sailors an opportunity to take in the sights and sounds of New York City and strengthen relationships between citizens in the local region and
#NATO.
During the visit, SNMG1 leadership held a force luncheon aboard the Belgian Navy frigate Leopold I (F930). Distinguished visitors who attended the luncheon included the Honorable Adam Connolly, assistant commissioner for the NYC Department of Veteran's Affairs, the Honorable Gale Brewer, Manhattan Borough president, Thomas Coumbe, vice president of Human Resources at the Intrepid Museum, and Charles Blaich, New York Navy League council president.
The Royal Norwegian Navy frigate HNoMS Thor Heyerdahl (F-314) also hosted Thor Heyerdahl Jr., the son of the ship’s namesake. During the visit, Heyerdahl Jr. was gifted the national ensign of Norway after it had been carried across the Atlantic Ocean aboard the ship.
SNMG1 is one of four standing maritime task groups composed of ships from various Allied countries. These task groups form the core maritime capabilities of
NATO’s Very High Readiness Joint Task Force (VJTF). They provide a continuous maritime capability to execute
NATO missions across the spectrum of operations, demonstrate solidarity, and strengthen diplomatic and professional links among Allied naval forces.
