| OCEAN STAR 86 Stranded Pinoys to be repatriated Sep 25 12:27Arrangements were being finalized for the repatriation of the remaining 11 Filipinos who have been stranded in Dongshan Dao aboard the 'Ocean Star 86' for several months now due to COVID-19 travel restrictions, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said in a statement on Sep 25, 2020, in response to allegations made by Migrante International that the pleas of the 11 stranded seafarers who were reportedly forced to work under subhuman conditions have been “falling on deaf ears.” The plight of the Filipino seafarers was first brought to the attention of the Philippine Consulate in Xiamen on April 22 when it received a letter from a certain ‘Jake Cruz’ through the Philippine Embassy in Beijing. Upon receipt of the letter, the Consulate immediately contacted the distressed seafarers through their team leader to ascertain their working, physical and mental conditions. Packages containing ready-to-eat food and personal hygiene needs such as shampoo, soap and toothpaste were immediately prepared as requested by the Filipino crew. This week the care packages were sent to the seafarers when the Philippine Consulate General in Xiamen learned that the vessel was finally allowed to dock on Sep 22 without yet being permitted to disembark its crew. The Philippine Consulate General also made regular representations to Chinese authorities and ship owners for all Filipino seafarers stranded in the waters off the coast of Fujian province, including those on the 'Ocean Star 86' and other Chinese vessels so that they be paid their salaries and other allowances and was continuing to act on the needs of the 11 Pinoys. On Sep 24, the migrant workers’ group demanded the immediate repatriation of the 11 in Dongshan, China and sought the filing of charges against their employers for subjecting the Filipinos to “horrendous suffering.” Migrante further claimed that the contracts of the seafarers already expired in 2019 but they were reportedly “forced to drink seawater and fed inadequately for many months.” Bunker spill in St. Petersburg Oct 09 2015 10:02The "Coral Mermaid" spilt an unknown amount of fuel while bunkering from the "Gazpromneft Nordwest" in St. Petersburg on Oct 6, 2015, into the water. Both vessels were fenced by booms and 0,2 cubic meter of oily water have been collected. On Oct 8 the reefer left the port being bound for Flusshing, ETA Oct 11. | MV RAJA 4 Ferry salvage due to start Sep 25 12:43On Sep 26 the raising of the 'Raja 4' was due to start and was expected to take three days. The last of the three trucks that went down with the ferry, and their loads of compressed garbage and electronic waste, had been hauled from the bottom of the sea on Sep 24. The ferry was en route from Koh Samui to the mainland when it sank in stormy seas in the night of Aug 1. 11 people were rescued. The five other people died, with the final body being found only after a week-long search by divers. Bow of ferry raised Sep 17 09:58On Sep 15 the bow of the 'Raja 4' has been raised using two crane ships. Smaller fishing boats have also been around the area to recover any trash that may fall out of the vessel during the salvage work. The Royal Thai Police was checking the vessel's condition and also investigated to determine the cause of the incident. Salvage delayed due to bad weather Sep 10 12:58The salvage of the 'Raja 4' off Koh Samui has been delayed due to strong winds and high tides. The operation was aimed at recovering the ferry and a number of garbage trucks. The shipwreck occurred on the journey back from Samui to the Don Sak pier on the Surat Thani mainland on the evening of Aug 1 in bad weather. Workers from the salvage company MS Service eed to first bring the ferry back on even keel. Then the garbage trucks will be raised and loaded on to pontoons. Once the operation can get underway, it was expected to be finished within a week. MV RAJA 4 MMSI:567890038 Width:9.0 m Length:42.0 m Flag:Thailand |

| ZERAN under the name of HEYMA Sold to Breakers Sep 26 12:11Sold to Breakers 360 USD/TO for Scrapped Container ship saved 194 migrants May 06 2015 10:35The "Zeran" saved 194 migrants on May 3, 2015, from a rubber boat and took them to Catania. Five refugees drowned when they fell into the water after the engine of the rubber boat exploded off Sicily. The "Zerań" was headed to Libya when it received a call for assistance from the Italian Navy. When the ship reached the boat, some passengers were already overboard. Crew members on the ship shouted for order, a fallreep was going to be lowered, everyone would make it on board. But the prospect of rescue sparked a panic. Some passengers were caught beneath the crush of people, while others were flung into the chilly, blue water. The uneven distribution of weight pushed one end of the dinghy into the water, causing it to deflate and start to sink. After the last passengers had clambered out of the dinghy, five trampled bodies were left floating amid garbage and pools of seawater. Between five and 40 others were thought to have drowned when they were pushed overboard. The crew on board managed to save 81 men, 8 women and 2 children. Italian naval units then transferred a further 103 refugees to the Polish ship, taking the overall number of saved to 194. Despite the crews' best efforts five migrants did not survive the incident. The refugees, mainly Ethiopians, were then transported to the Sicilian port of Catania. | Hostile waters of New Zealand Sep 26, 2020 at 16:52. 3 Germans, crew of 16-meter sailing yacht ANITA, were detained on Sep 25 at Opua, Bay of Islands, Northern Island, New Zealand, for violating New Zealand's Covid-19 border restrictions. "New Zealand's border restrictions are in place for a very good reason – to help stop the spread of Covid-19 and protect the health of New Zealand's population," said Peter Elms, Immigration NZ's national manager of border and visa operations. "The action by these individuals to knowingly travel here without approval demonstrates a blatant disregard for New Zealand's border restrictions and will not be tolerated." The Ministry of Health said the three crew had all returned negative Covid-19 tests and had been isolated on board their yacht for more than 14 days. Elms said the crew had requested an exemption to the Covid-19 border restrictions but chose to travel before getting approval. "The request for a border exception was refused and they chose to continue to sail to Opua regardless. None of the crew made any request for an immigration border exception for themselves." A Ministry of Health spokeswoman said the crew had applied for the exemption on humANITArian grounds and to repair the ship. "While there were aspects of the case that were unfortunate, these did not rise to the threshold of a compelling humANITArian need. As much as our country is known for its hospitality, New Zealand cannot become a maritime Covid-19 safe haven for everyone in unfortunate circumstances." ANITA had last docked at Taiohae on Nuku Hiva Island in French Polynesia. The 4000km journey to the Bay of Islands took two months and 18 days. The Customs spokeswoman said the vessel was liable for seizure and duty liability and was being held in Customs control for further investigation. Elms said the refusal of entry to New Zealand could have long-term consequences for the crew. Their visa waiver status could be suspended and it could affect their ability to travel to other countries. "The swift response to this situation should send a clear message to others who might consider doing similar. Attempting to breach New Zealand's border controls is a serious matter and will be dealt with accordingly." Three Germans detained after breaking Covid border restrictions |
