EUROFORCE Tanker with seized oil without destination
Sep 28 10:05

The 'Eurofoce' has been sailing around with seized Iranian oil in its cargo for about two months now because the ownership of the oil has ended in a showdown in the courts. This ship and the tanker 'Maersk Progress' have therefore not yet been able to unload the more than one million barrels oil in a US port.
The Iranian oil on board the two ships was confiscated by the US Department of Justice from four Greek-controlled tankers heading for Venezuela in an effort to prevent trade in oil and oil products between the two sanctioned countries. The oil been on board Maersk Progress and Euroforce since July, when the two ships entered US waters while waiting to be told where the oil was to be unloaded. But the case remained unresolved due to the lawsuits.
On Sep 22, 2020, two companies claiming to own the oil asked a US judge to release the cargo, arguing that the seizure "was based on a number of unfounded assumptions". The  Oman Fuel and Sohar Fuel thus pointed out that the oil on board was on its way to customers in Peru and Colombia - not Venezuela.
But the US Department of Justice maintained that the fuel comes from companies with close ties to the Iranian Revolutionary Guards and that they tried to mask ownership. Therefore, the seizure was correct in relation to the US sanctions against Iran, the ministry stated in the case.
The 'Euroforce', which was the first to arrive in US waters, has been off the coast of Texas for a few weeks, while the 'Maersk Progress' was off Miami, Florida on Sep 24 with Houston as its destination.

Tanker with seized Iranian oil arrived in Freeport
Sep 10 12:39

The 'Euroforce' with a cargo of Iranian gasoline confiscated by the United States arrived on Sep 9, 2020, off Freeport, Texas, and has retained the Texas Marine Agency, a Houston-based cargo agent, in preparation to offload its fuel. The United States government had seized fuel from Iran-linked tankers that were bound for Venezuela. The fuel was transferred to the 'Euroforce' and 'Maersk Progress', the latter was due to arrive in Houston later in September. The 'Euroforce' was carrying about 640,000 barrels of gasoline when it arrived in Freeport. The vessel was not scheduled to be unloaded at the port's public docks and likely would be handled by one of two private docks.
Owners of four Iranian fuel cargoes have challenged the seizure in a U.S. District Court, asserting their rights to control the cargoes, which they said were bound for customers in Peru and Colombia.

VIENNA WOOD N Bulkcarrier allowed to leave Philippine waters
Sep 28 10:33

The Mamburao Regional Trial Court in Occidental Mindoro has dismissed the charges filed against the 'Vienna Wood N' regarding thecollision with the fishing vessel 'Liberty V'.  The Philippine Coast Guard reported, that the owner of the vessel  had a meeting with the relatives of the affected victims. and the two parties reached a settlement, which led the local court to dismiss the case of reckless imprudence, resulting in multiple homicide and damage to property filed by the families of the victims. The District Commander of the Coastguard Southern Visayas stated that due to the dismissal, the vessel has now been allowed to leave Philippine waters and headed to Shanghai, ETA Oct 1.

Duty crew attacked by perpetrator
Sep 01 13:16

While the  duty  roving  crew  was  performing his  duty  at  the  main deck of the 'Vienna Wood N' on Aug 20 2020,  a perpetrator with a bolo (knife) attacked him. The duty  crew  tried  to  stop  the  perpetrator  but  accidentally  grabbed  the  bolo,  which  resulted  in  a  cut  on  his  right  palm.  The  perpetrator  escaped  empty-handed.  The  general  alarm  was raised immediately and first aid was administered to the injured duty crew. The incident was reported to the Port State Control (PSC) and the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG). The PSC Batangas and Coast Guard Station (CGS) Batangas responded to the incident but did  not  find  any  watercrafts  or  person  within  the  ship's  surroundings. The wounded crew was evacuated and brought to a hospital for treatment. The master assessed that the perpetrator may have boarded the ship by throwing a line with a hook.

Formal settlement reached
Aug 25 13:25

On Aug 24 a formal settlement has been reached between the 'Vienna Wood' and the families of 14 Filipinos who went missing when the vessel collided with their fishing boat on June 27 off Mamburao, Occidental Mindoro. The meeting between the two camps started with the finalization of pending issues concerning the settlement of the civil case. Lawyers of the two camps came to a final agreement, which they shared to PCG chief Admiral George Ursabia and other Coast Guard officials as formal witnesses on the side of the government. Nomikos Transworld Maritime, the owner of the vessel, increased the amount of the compensation to the families of the missing Filipinos and to the Irma Fishing and Trading Corporation, the owner of the fishing boat 'Liberty 5'. Initially, the kin of the 14 missing fishermen and two other passengers were set to receive compensations amounting to P1 million each. On the other hand, the Irma Fishing and Trading Corporation was set to receive a settlement amount of P40 million from MV Vienna Wood to cover the cost of the fishing vessel. The lawyers decided not to disclose the exact settlement amount, but said that the amount was highly acceptable to the victims. The PCG will continue to pursue the criminal case filed against the 'Vienna Wood' and will respect the final decision of the court. Criminal complaints had been lodged against the shipping company, the master, and the officers of the vessel. A hold departure order was also issued against the crew to ensure that bulk carrier will remain in the Philippines' custody.

ARANUI 5 Cruise cancelled after seven cases of COVID-19 among crew
Sep 28 12:14

The 'Aranui' which provides service, between Tahiti and the Marquesas Islands, docked at Papeete on Sep 27, the day after its departure, after seven Covid-19 cases have been identified among the crew members. No passenger has tested positive. A test of the entire crew is required 48 hours before departure and a test of passengers 24 hours before departure. While waiting for the results to be obtained, the ship was taken to sea on Sep 26, remaining close to Tahiti with a strict separation between passengers and crew. Upon confirmation of the seven positive cases, the ship returned to the dock in Papeete and the owner decided to cancel the cruise. Passengers will be able to stay on board the ship for up to 48 hours, the time for the owner to organize return flights for international tourists. Passengers will be reimbursed or asked to reschedule this cruise at a later date. The next tourist cruise was due to start on Oct 15. As it is nevertheless necessary to ensure the cargo supply of the Henua Enana, the 'Aranui 5' will leave on Sep 3ß only for a rotation intended for freight. The time will be used to reconstitute a crew and to completely disinfect the ship.

New Container-Cruise Ship Sails South Pacific
Nov 23 2015 10:01

The vessel will be homeported in Papeete, the island nation’s capital, and will sail between the Marquesas Archipelago and the Tuamotu atolls of the South Pacific. The vessel was ordered from China by the French Polynesian shipping company Compagnie Maritime Transport Polynésienne. The 3,300 dwt vessel is 126.1 meters (410 feet) long and has a shallow draft of 5.2 meters (17 feet). There is room for 191 containers, loaded by two onboard cranes, and accommodation for up to 254 passengers in 103 cabins. Besides a restaurant (260 seats) and two lounges, there are also two meeting rooms, three bars, a disco, a swimming pool, a shop and rooms for massages and sport. The Aranui 5 will complete a circuit of 2,200 miles leaving from Papeete and traveling to inhabited islands in the region. It will be the only vessel to serve some very small harbors in the South Pacific including Nuku Hiva, Ua Pou, Hiva Oa, Fatu Hiva, Ua Huka, Rangiroa and Bora Bora. The vessel carries supplies, fuel and other staples to the remote island ports and also receives imports form the islands in the form of dried coconut, citrus and fish. The Aranui 5 replaces the Aranui 3. The most obvious difference is in the quality of the accommodation. The Aranui 3 looked more like a cargo ship that could carry passengers, rather than Aranui 5 which was conceived to clearly be half a cruise ship. French Polynesia is divided into five groups of islands: The Society Islands archipelago composed of the Windward Islands and the Leeward Islands, the Tuamotu Archipelago, the Gambier Islands, the Marquesas Islands and the Austral Islands. Among its 118 islands and atolls, 67 are inhabited. Tahiti, located within the Society Islands, is the most populous island and the seat of the capital. Source: MAREX

The 'Mein Schiff 1' and 'Mein Schiff 2' will continue with their "Blue Cruises" (no port calls) in the North and Baltic Sea, offering five-  and seven-day cruises in September, according to the company.  For the time being all departures of the Mein Schiff fleet (departures from September) will require a negative COVID-19 test result (PCR test). The costs for this  are  already  included  in  the  travel  price.  Before  new  crew comes onboard, they are tested for COVID-19  shoreside.  Only crew members who have tested negative can come onboard and then they also go into 14-day individual isolation on a balcony cabin before they begin working.

SMARTA Engine damage under repair in Illichivsk
Sep 28 10:37

The 'Smarta' remained stationary in Illichivsk as of Sep 28, 2020. The owners have provided spare parts from authorized manufacturer, and the vessel was shifted to another pier in the port in order to continue the repairs, under the supervision of owners' superintendent following the engine failure off Malta on May 18.

Skipper couple toxicated by cargo of Smarta
Dec 07 2019 21:21

A skipper couple who had been in contact with large quantities of toxic gas in the cargo hold of the 'Fox', 508 ts (ENI-No.: 02313718), for hours ended up in intensive care on Dec 4, 2019. The fire brigade took the husband and his wife from board in Nieuwegein. Both skippers spent the first few days in intensive care at a hospital in Nieuwegein. The woman was in a bad state and therefore she has been transferred to the University Medical Center Utrecht and wa being kept in a coma. Measurements in the cargo showed that the concentration of phosphine (rat poison) was 15 ppm, much higher than the safe standard of 0.2 ppm.
RIVM measurements showed that the phosphine concentration was indeed too high. The ship was still on the Lek in Nieuwegein, but according to the fire department there was no danger to the environment.
According to the ASV, the ship was loaded with sunflower meal pellets, which are used as animal feed. In order to keep insects and other vermin away, substances are added. The 'Fox' has collected the cargo of feed from a company in Amsterdam. The food came from the cargo m/v 'Smarta' which had arrived at Amsterdam coming from Yuzhniy with a cargo of sunflower animal feed on Nov 27. The cargo of the vessel was first examined for harmful substances and only then transferred to other ships. It was not clear whether something went wrong with this measurement.
Other ships that have taken over cargo from the same seagoing vessel have been traced and warned by Rijkswaterstaat and the SZW Inspectorate. The Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate was also conducting an investigation. The problem concerned 17 ships. By order of the SZW Inspectorate, five ships were no longer allowed to sail. The 'Smarta' left Amsterdam on Dec 4, bound to Riga with an ETA as of Dec 10.
On May 18, 2020, the ship suffered engine trouble off Malta. Permanent repairs were carried out by shore based technical teams in the inner port of Chornomorsk since June 1.

Aground on river Don
Oct 28 2012 03:04

Russian media reported quoting Emergency Agency of Russia the grounding of a Moldova flagged general cargo vessel in river Don estuary near Azov port, not mentioning its’ name. According to the news, vessel loaded with barley was en route from Rostov-on-Don to Kerch and grounded in the morning Oct 27 2012. Most probably the vessel in question is Turkish general cargo vessel Dolphin. AIS shows vessel stays in the same position on river Don from morning Oct 27, not anchored, destination Kerch.

XING GUANG 168 Crew of stranded vessel reached out for help
Sep 28 19:30

The crew of 10 of the 'Xing Guang 168' have reached out for help after being stuck off the Port of Taichung for two months in poor living conditions and often suffering food and water shortages. The crew consists of seven Myanmar nationals and three Indonesians. The ship’s Master stated on Sep 17, 2020: “We don’t know what to do. We have no food, no fresh water. We have requested permission to berth from Taichung Port Authority. Also requests to Taiwan Coast Guard, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, ITF, police. Nobody helps us. The agent always lies, ignores us, and never keeps his promise. I’ve never seen a ship like this.”
On Sep 18, the Indonesian embassy had come and supplied the crew with enough food and water to last them about one week.
In a document that appears to have been written prior to Sep 20, the Master said that the crew was scheduled to return to Myanmar by a Taipei to Yangon flight on Sep 20.
The ship has been anchored at Taichung City “S” Anchorage area, Taiwan since July 29.
The crew has not been paid a salary for two months. According to the minimum safe manning document, the ship’s living space is designed for just six people, but there are 11 people onboard.
The crew’s agent has sent e-tickets to fly Taipei to Yangon Oct 4, but the agent was also ordering the crew to sail the ship to a point 20 miles away to be supplied with fuel, before sailing back to the Port of Taichung. The estimated sign off date will be the end of this month,  the agent wrote in a Line message.
The crew was refusing to do this as the weather is very bad and it seemed impossible to carry out ship to ship fueling 20 miles off the coast. The present fuel on board was enough for berthing. Fresh water for engine cooling was very little. The ship was not safe for sailing out from Taichung and needed to be supplied with fresh water first. Also there are not enough life jackets for each crew member.
The life raft, EPIRB, and SART are expired.
On Sep 29 the crew has to take a COVID-19 PCR Test, so they should be alongside the wharf. Every crew member has completed their contract and have been onboard for more than one year and wants to go home.

Medevac off Kerry Head
Feb 22 2017 13:27

The Shannon based Coast Guard helicopter Rescue 115 has evacuated a seriously injured crewman from the "Morskoy Priboy" approximately 140 nautical miles West of Kerry Head on Feb 21, 2017. The operation was being coordinated by the Marine Rescue Coordination Centre in Valentia and was being supported by the Naval ship "LÉ Róisín". Crew members from the "LÉ Róisín" went on board the vessel and assisted with casualty evacuation. Communication support and back up, known as Top Cover was provided by a second Coast Guard helicopter, the Waterford based R117.
Weather conditions in the area for helicopter operations were difficult, bordering on marginal for such operations with a strong West South West swell and winds gusting in excess of 35mph. The helicopter arrived at the University Hospital Limerick, at 7:30 p.m., following an essential fuel stopover at Kerry airport.
