HONG DAI COSCO Panamax grounding confirmed, Newport - Norfolk

The Coast Guard Sector Virginia and the Port of Virginia’s Maritime Incident Response Team were assisting the crew of the 'Hong Dai' after it ran aground near Norfolk, while enroute from Baltimore to Norfolk, in pos. 36° 58.13' N 076° 19.92' W on Oct, 2020, at 1.30 a.m. Watchstanders at the Coast Guard Sector Virginia command center received notification from the bulk coal carrier Hong Dai, stating the ship ran aground on a soft sandy bottom approximately one quarter mile Northwest of Sewell’s Point in Norfolk. The crew reported no injuries, pollution or flooding concerns at the time. Sector Virginia investigation crews have boarded the ship and are assisting in assessing damages and the threat of pollution.
The vessel remained under a Captain of the Port order to remain in place and the Coast Guard is currently in communication with the ship’s owners to assist in establishing a salvage plan. In the afternoon the tug 'Maxwell Paul Moran' (MMSI: 9812559) was near the grounded vessel.

1630 UTC UPDATE: Confirmed aground, starboard list and aft tilt, resting on sandy bottom. CG reportedly waiting for salvage plan. Understood refloating preparations under way.

5 vessels pushed aground by gale wind in Istanbul

On the night of Oct 18 due to strong SSW wind with a force of 7-8, 5 cargo vessels were dragged ashore in Istanbul. It was such a mess that to get an exact picture and chronology of the mishap seems to be very difficult, especially considering the fact, that all news are in Turkish. Anyway, it looks like that some of the vessels, including Kumdas 2 and Ismet Atasoy, were seriously damaged, but there are no casualities. All 5 vessels are Turkish general cargo ships.

Delivery of cruise ship postponed due to coronavirus

The delivery of the 'Enchanted Princess' by the Fincantieri Monfalcone Shipyard has been postponed for an uncertain time due to the corona crisis. All departures of the ship until July 31, 2020, were affected tp date. Also the christening of the vessel on March 30 in Southampton will not take place. There was no date for the completion to date.

GENCO AUVERGNE Grounding on Columbia River

The 'Genco Auvergne', while enroute from Busan, ran aground on Oct 1, 2020, on the Washington side of the Columbia River south of the Skamokawa Vista Park. Watchstanders at the Coast Guard Columbia River received a report at 12:50 a.m. that the container ship had run soft aground due to a loss of main engine propulsion while transiting down the Columbia River.
The tugs 'Carolyn Dorothy', 'Samantha S.' and 'Willamette' were deployed to the scene to assist. The captain of the 'Genco Auvergne' reported no injuries or pollution.
The vessel had on board a cargo of grain and approximately 616,644 gallons of fuel oil. The Coast Guard dispatched a marine inspector from Sector Columbia River and a Columbia River Bar Pilot is aboard Genco Auvergne coordinating vessel traffic through the area. Regular soundings are being taken to monitor fuel-tank levels. The Coast Guard coordinated with the vessel'S agents, the monitoring class society, river pilots, the flag state and port partners, The implementation of the non-tank vessel response plan mitigated the impacts of the incident and will assist in the expedited re-floating of the vessel. The vessel was re-floated at 2:20 p.m. during high tide and continued transiting to Longview. At 6.30 p.m. the ship berthed at the Longview Port Authority General Cargo Terminals.

MSC INGRID Container ship with double trouble

The 'MSC Ingrid', while en route from Rotterdam to Piraeus, with 38714,2 tonnes of containers and 24 crew members on board, suffered a lube oil leak in the engine room in position 50 18 13 N, 001 06 20 W, on Sep 24, 2020, at 01.50 a.m. The crew fixed the leak at 03.40 a.m. and was investigating an engine problem. After they completed repair works the ship resumed its voyage with an ETA as of Oct 8.
