DESERT DIAMOND 25 crew members stuck on board Oct 05 12:51 The 25 crew members stuck on board the 'Desert Diamond' in Cape Town Harbour claimed they are being prevented from going home to see their families. Some of the men have been at sea for six months and longer. Between 110 and 115 crew members were initially on the vessel, but some have returned home while the Russian colleagues, about a third of the crew, were flown home. Oceana also brought in a relief Russian crew, who were actually in quarantine. A spokesperson for Oceana Grou said the company’s front-line employees, including those on vessels, were required to observe stringent protocols. The crew has the option to leave at any time, but must bear in mind that once they leave, they will only be allowed to return to the vessel once they test negative for Covid-19 and observe the mandatory quarantine period While the crew said they were healthy, are being fed and treated well, all they wanted was to return home. The Food and Allied Workers Union (FAWU) asked the office of the National Fishing Sector Coordinator for clarity on the future of 1500 sea-going workers in similar positions. The union’s letter to the national Fishing Sector Coordinator was dated Sep 29, 2020. . The SAMSA was aware of the situation regarding the 'Desert Diamond' and currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the situation and will issue official communication in due course.

STAR BALBOA Crew continues to be detained on board and contracted COVID-19 Oct 05 12:58 The continued detention of the 'Star Balboa' and the 17 crew members, most of whom have contracted Covid-19, on suspicion of drug trafficking was turning out to be a diplomatic problem. In early September, the tanker arrived in Port of Spain to dispose of garbage and replenish their water and provisions but the vessel was arrested by local shipping agents for an outstanding bill of close to $80,000. After the bill was settled withom hours, a joint team of police, Coastguard, immigration, customs and prison officers boarded the vessel to execute a search warrant for dangerous drugs based on intelligence passed on by an international ally. Among the units involved in the operation were members of the elite Transnational Organised Crime Unit, which falls under the Ministry of National Security, Special Intelligence Unit, Customs and Excise, Immigration and even prison officers. Between Sep 2 and 13, officers searched every inch of the vessel, sending divers below and even wanted to empty the fuel tank and came up empty-handed. The vessel was anchored four miles off the coast of Chaguaramas and was ordered by local authorities to empty its ballast tanks in local waters in contravention of maritime laws. The crew contracted Covid-19 from members of the search party, some of whom were unmasked and in close proximity in crowded areas of the ship. Some members of the search team have also contracted Covid-19, as well as one member of the crew legal team. And the longer the vessels remains stuck, it is racking up a bill of US$11,700 a day in rental fees. A team of lawyers representing the owners of the vessel and the crew led by Sophia Chote SC, Nyree Alfonso, Peter Carter and Asif Hosein-Shah went to court challenging the alleged breach of their clients' constitutional rights but the matter was dismissed by Justice Eleanor Donaldson-Honeywell, who also refused to grant an injunction to prohibit the continued searches on Sep 17. Even though the searches ended after the court action, Coast Guard on Oct 2 ordered the crew not to leave and threatened to use lethal force if they did. The crew was now seeking help from the Panamanian authorities to go home. They have been at sea since July and had their communication devices confiscated by local authorities. Among the crew were eight Panamanians, three Venezuelans, including the captain Colombian, Peruvian, Nicaraguan and Argentine nationals. A total of 14 of them, including the captain, have contracted Covid-19. The captain collapsed on board and had to be taken to Caura for treatment but has returned to the vessel. The electronic equipment, including cell phones, was seized and the crew was not given the right to have a lawyer. They also asked that urgent medical assistance be offered to treat the Covid-19 disease and demand that the legal process be expedited. While they did not oppose the investigations by local authorities, they want it to be completed as soon as possible, because they have already been detained for 21 days.

LADY ALICE Long range medevac off Hawaii Oct 05 21:34 In the morning of Oct 4 2020, the captain of the 'Lady Alice' suffered a heart attack while the ship was just over 150 nautical miles east of Hilo in Hawaii. The crew immediately called for assisance. The great distance to land meant that the quickest solution was to send an HC-130J Combat King II with three parachute-trained rescuers to the position. The three rescuers jumped from great heights and landed close to the fishing vessel. On board, they found that the 73-year-old captain needed more help than they could give him on the spot, so a long-range Seahawk helicopter was sent to the ship to medevac the man and transport him to a hospital ashore.

ANDROMEDA Ultra Large crude oil tanker, reportedly, harassed by UAE Oct 06 06:22
A strange story of how ULCC ANDROMEDA, loaded with some 2 mil barrels of crude, thwarted UAE attempts to block her voyage to China, was reported by local outlet Adennews.net. The ship left Al Dhabba Ash Shihr offshore oil terminal, Mukalla, Yemen, Gulf of Aden, in the morning Oct 4, reportedly bound for China. According to local source, UAE tried to block tanker with dinghies, but safe passage was provided by international escort, whatever it means. Port of destination not identified, tanker is sailing in SE direction, with “armed guards on board’ AIS status. It’s impossible for an outsider to understand who is who and standing for what against whom, in Middle East. Listening to insiders and “experts” doesn’t help, because each has his own story. So any attempt to explain ANDROMEDA incident, if there was one, is a wild guess and crystal gazing.

BADARO Crew waiting for debts since several months Oct 06 11:40 The 27 crew members of the 'Badara' were claiming wages and dismissal debts ranging from US $ 15,000 to US $ 40,000. A group of the 27 has camped in front of a sumptuous farm owned by the ship's owner in Punta Ballena, and another group remained aboard the ship in the port of Montevideo. The “Badaro” was bought by the current owner, Ignacio Arocena, in 2019. Before, the same crew worked with him on another ship. The 2019 harvest began with a 100-day tour in the first days of March, from which they returned with 33 tons of toothfish; After 10 days of rest they left again and after 107 days they returned to the port of Montevideo with 43 tons. They returned earlier from the third trip, for the October elections. They went out again and returned with another 15 tons of toothfish which is traded on the international market at prices that can vary between US $ 20,000 and US $ 25,000 per ton. It was after this last trip of 2019 that the problems arose. As established in the employment contracts, upon arrival at port the crew must have deposited the agreed salary, which in this case had not been fulfilled. On Dec 23 Arocena admitted that he had no money, but that he would sell the “Badaro” to pay all the debts. However, months passed and the accounts were not settled since. The company closed its office in Uruguay and the businessman is in Chile. TROPIC HOPE Crew members repatriated after more a year on board Oct 06 11:47 Seven crew members of the 'Tropic Hope' who have been stuck on board the ship for more than a year will be repatriated on Oct 10, 2020, in Palm Beach according to an inspector with the International Transport Workers' Federation. The ship docked in Halifax on Oct 4. Karl Risser, the federation's inspector for Atlantic Canada, met with officials from the Canada Border Services Agency and Transport Canada that evening and came to a resolution. The ship's next visit to Palm Beach was scheduled for Oct. 10. Risser inspected the ship on Sep. 20 and has expressed concern about the crew members. Another seven people will go home during a call to Palm Beach on Oct. 23. The first group was the most critical because they have been on the ship for so long. The 'Tropic Hope' has been working a route to Florida and the Caribbean from Halifax for more than a year without its crew going home due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Risser's group had asked for Canadian officials to detain the 'Tropic Hope' in Halifax until the issue was settled. On Sept. 20, he boarded the vessel and spoke with the captain and some of the crew. He learned six crew members had been on board since August and September 2019, well past their original nine-month contracts. The inspection followed a complaint from an international seafarer's wife who was worried about her husband's mental and physical well-being. Transport Canada was aware of the concerns with the 'Tropic Hope'. On Sept. 20 an inspector found a deficiency under the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) and instructed the master of the vessel to rectify it. The federation will continue to monitor the 'Tropic Hope' to ensure the company follows through.
