| HOEGH XIAMEN Beached for Scrapped Oct 07 15:59Beached at Aliaga 05.10.20 HOEGH XIAMEN arrived Aliaga Anchorage Oct 03 11:00arrived Aliaga Anchorage 03.10.20 Firefighters suiing for their injuries Sep 02 12:56Three months after the fire aboard the 'Hoegh Xiamen' in Jacksonville, 10 firefighters injured in a related blast were suing for their injuries. The law firm Pajcic & Pajcic filed a lawsuit on behalf of 10 Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department employees on Sep 1, 90 days after th eexplosion that severely injured some of them. Some had to be treated at the burn unit in Gainesville, and three first responders remained off the job due to their injuries. The cause why the ship caught fire on June 4 in the St. Johns River while at Blount Island was still under investigation, but the plaintiffs’ attorney, Curry Pajcic, said the ship had just been loaded with 2,400 junked cars that were to be transported to western Africa. At 6:45 p.m. June 4, while fighting the fire from the inside, at least 10 firefighters were in the stairwell when there was an explosion on the eighth deck. The Jacksonville-based lawyer described what the Jacksonville firefighters faced putting out a 1,000 degree Fahrenheit fire on a ship filled with scrapped cars. The ship had no flooding sprinkler system an no standpipes that the firefighters could plug their hoses in to put out the fire. They had to drag a hose up the ramp, up the stairwell and into this deck. The explosion was nearly catastrophic. Despite their protective gear, the heat and flames caused severe burns on firefighters, snapping one rescuer’s arm. None of them died, but several were hospitalized, with some sent to the burn unit in Gainesville. With two injured firefighters by his side, Pajcic outlined his reasons for a lawsuit against the companies involved: Hoegh Autoliners, Horizon Terminal Services, Grimaldi Deep Sea and SSA Marine. Together, the companies have offices in Norway, Italy and the United States. Horizon has an office in Ponte Vedra Beach. The plaintiffs are Captain Kristopher Jolly, Lt. Jeremy Lee, Chief Matthew Cipriani, Firefighter Paramedic Shawn O’Shell, Lt. Paul Masci, Firefighter Nicholas Gettler, Engineer Landon Simmons, Firefighter Paramedic Samuel Banks, Firefighter William Reed and Engineer Wesley Miller. Their spouses are also named. The suit claims the crew loaded wrecked and junk cars to send to Africa without disconnecting the batteries and electrical systems. Pajcic said that while in port, the crew shut down the ship’s fire alarm system, and when time was crucial, the crew did not call 911 when the fire started. The crew did not speak English to communicate with first responders trying to learn more about the location of the fire. It took more than 150 firefighters over a week to put out the fire and cost the city of Jacksonville millions of dollars. The Coast Guard and the National Transportation Safety Board were doing separate investigations. There was no amount for the lawsuit. That would be decided in court if the case goes that far. | SERVET ANA Crew change tragic accident, Chief Engineer died Oct 07 18:18A tragic accident took place off Liberian coast, West Africa, early in the morning Oct 3. Two Turkish cargo ships, bulk carrier SERVET ANA and general cargo ship BAKU, both operated by the same company, met outside Liberian territorial waters and anchored, to perform crew transfer operation by a rescue boat. Two crew from SERVET ANA were to be transferred to BAKU, understood as offsigners, to be taken to Turkey. Unfortunately, boat with 2 offsigners and 2 boat personnel, capsized, all 4 people found themselves floating in water. SERVET ANA had to deploy a lifeboat (free-fall type) to rescue seamen. All 4 were picked up, but one of them, reportedly Chief Engineer, died, despite all first-aid efforts. As of Oct 7, SERVET ANA was berthed at Abidjan, Ivory, Coast, BAKU was under way, en route from Nigeria to France. Such crew transfers come as no surprise, considering governments worldwide hostile attitude towards crews and crew change. Of course, all new approaches and solutions, practiced by shipowners and managers, in order to change their crews, mean new, much more complicated, and sometimes risky, procedures. | 95% of marine life killed in the Kamchatka eco-disaster. Oct 08 08:42 In an unexplained mass death of marine animals in Russia's Kamchatka peninsula, nearly all seafloor-dwelling life has perished in pollution hit waters. Authorities in Russia's Far East are warning people to avoid beaches on the coast of the Kamchatka Peninsula after a mass die-off of marine life. As environmentalists raised the alarm over an ecological disaster, social media was abuzz with images showing hundreds of dead octopuses, large fish, sea urchins, and crabs washing up on the shore of Russia's Khalaktyrsky beach. As per reports from the office of Kamchatka's governor Vladimir Solodov, authorities were considering manmade pollution, natural phenomena, or a volcano-related earthquake as possible causes of the mass deaths. Local residents who used the Pacific beaches complained of vomiting, fever, rashes, and swollen eyelids. Kamchatka is one of Russia's remotest regions, famous for its pristine nature and active volcanoes. Local surfer Rasul Gadzhiev said, "We began to see that something was wrong with the water because after an ordinary surf you come out feeling good, but this time it felt like we had burned eyes, we couldn't even see straight." Government officials have not ruled out the possibility of a pesticide leakage that might've caused the catastrophe. A special commission is set to examine the waters near the Kozelsky and Radinsky military test sites located near Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky for evidence suggesting the same. After taking part in an expedition to assess the possible extent of the damages, underwater photographer Alexander Korobok said, “After this dive, I can confirm that there is an environmental disaster. The ecosystem has been significantly undermined and this will have long-term consequences since everything in nature is interconnected.” Greenpeace has said its tests of water samples from around Khalaktyrsky beach showed petroleum levels four times higher than normal, and levels of the toxic organic compound phenol 2.5 times higher than usual. Another explanation is that of a rocket fuel leak. Some experts have suggested highly toxic rocket fuel could have leaked into the sea. The first test site, Radygino, is about six miles (10km) from the sea and was used for drills in August. Vladimir Burkanov, a biologist specializing in seals, in a comment published by the Novaya Gazeta opposition newspaper, suggested old stores of rocket fuel kept in Rad Gino could have rusted and the fuel leaked into streams. According to the governor’s website, the other site, Kozelsky, has been used to bury toxic chemicals and pesticides. The pristine peninsula is a popular destination for adventure tourism because of an abundance of wildlife and live volcanoes. The incident came as authorities urged tourists not to visit a live volcano on Kamchatka owing to fears of an imminent eruption. |
