Two passengers were killed after the Red Star Line Steamship Waesland collided with the steamer Harmonides in fog shrouded waters off the coast of Anglesey, Wales, on March 8, 1902. It could have been worse. The other 201 passengers and crew members safely escaped on the ship’s lifeboats even as the ship was sinking under their feet.

The Waesland, a 435-foot steamship under the command of a Captain Apfield was beginning a routine trip from Liverpool to Philadelphia with 114 passengers and general cargo. The vessel had been moving cautiously through dense fog all that afternoon and was still in the thick of it when it reached the Anglesey coast at about midnight. Nearly all of the passengers and off-duty crew members were asleep in their beds when the Harmonides suddenly appeared out of the fog and drove her bow amidships into the side of the Waesland.

The bow of the Harmonides cut into the room of the Waesland’s purser, and a heavy steel plate of the ship’s stern fell into the room. Miraculously the man escaped alive.

With a large gash in its side the Waesland was doomed. The ship began taking on water immediately and sank in about 20 minutes. There was a mad scramble for the ship’s lifeboats. Most of the survivors escaped wearing only their nightclothes. Edwin Dangerfield, an American who had been visiting Europe with his family, lost his footing when one of the davits to the lifeboat he was boarding failed. They said he fell head-first into the boat and died instantly of a crushed skull. A little girl, who was never identified, also fell from the tipped lifeboat and drowned.

All of the other passengers and crew members escaped, even as the water was splashing over the deck. Apfield and his offers were the last to leave the ship. They were just pulling off when the water reached the hot boilers below, causing them to explode. The ship then turned on its side and sank.

The Harmonides, with its bow crushed and the crew working hard to plug the leaking holes, backed off the Waesland and was standing nearby in the fog. The water was pouring in at the forepeak, but the collision bulkheads held and the ship remained afloat and operational. The Harmonides picked up all of the survivors and carried them back to Liverpool.

The Waesland was launched in 1867 as the Russia. She had the distinction of being Cunard’s first transatlantic screw steamer. It was sold to the Red Star Line, an American company, in 1880. At that time the ship was completely rebuilt, lengthened, refitted with compound engines and put on the British and North American run.

The WASELAND was a 4,752 gross ton ship, built by J & G Thomason, Glasgow in 1867. Her details were - length 435.1ft x beam 41.9ft., clipper stem, one funnel, four masts, iron construction, sincle screw and a speed of 14 knots. There was accomodation for 120 lst class and 1,500 third class passengers. Launched on March 20, 1967 as the Russia for the Cunard Line, she was purchased by the Red Star Line of Antwerp in 1880, lengthened from 358 ft. to 435.1 ft., fitted with compound engines by the builders, and renamed Waseland. On December 6, 1880 she commenced her first voyage for these owners when she sailed from Antwerp for New York. In 1889 she was fitted with triple-expansion engines. In 1895 she started Philadelphia - Liverpool crossings under charter to the American line. She was sunk in a collision with the British ship "Harmonides" off Anglesely on March 5, 1902 with the loss of 2 lives.

PENNLAND

Construit en 1922 aux chantiers Harland and Wolf de Belfast (Irlande) sous le nom de Pittsburgh pour la ligne Liverpool-Boston de l'American Steamship Cy, il passe dès 1922 sous le pavillon de la White Star line après la banqueroute de la compagnie. Il est transféré à la Red Star Line en janvier 1925 et renommé Pennland. En 1939, la compagnie est rachetée par la Holland America Line. Réquisitionné comme transport de troupe par la Royal Navy, il joue un rôle dans notre histoire puisqu'il transporte des Français libres dans la triste affaire de Dakar en septembre 1940. Il est bombardé et coulé dans le golfe d'Athènes le 25 avril 1941.

Built in 1920 by Harland and Wolf of Belfast (Ireland) as the SS Pittsburgh, this ship was intended for the American Steamship Company from Liverpool to Boston. Because of American Steamship Company’s suspension of service, she was transferred to White Star Line where she served from 1922 until 1924. In January 1925 she was transferred to Red Star Line and renamed Pennland. In 1939 Red Star Line and the Pennland were sold to Holland America Line. In 1940 she was requisitioned by the Royal Navy for use as a troopship. It was in that role that she was bombed and sunk in the Gulf of Athens on April 25 1941.

WESTERNLAND


Westernland a été construit pour la Red Star Line par Laird Bros de Birkenhead. C'était le premier navire en acier de la compagnie, son premier à deux cheminées et son premier à proposer trois classes. Il est sorti de la cale sèche où il a été construit en août 1883. Le 3 novembre, son voyage inaugural le mène d'Anvers à Philadelphie. Une route qu'il pratiqua jusqu'à mars 1901 quand il est placé sur la ligne de Liverpool à Philadelphie de l'American Line. En effet, les deux compagnies appartenaient au même groupe International Navigation Co et les navires de l'un étaient souvent appelés sur les lignes de l'autre. Il revient sur la ligne Danvers à New York de la Red Star Line de mars 1906 à janvier 1907. Westernland effectue un dernier voyage pour American Line entre Liverpool et Philadelphie en septembre 1908. Il est démoli en 1912.

The Westernland was built for the Red Star Line by Laird Bros., of Birkenhead. She was Red Star's first steel-hulled ship, the line's first ship with two funnels and the first Red Star steamer with three classes of passenger accommodations. She was built in drydock due to a shortage of building berths at Laird's, and was "launched" by being floated out of the drydock in August 1883. She made her maiden voyage on 3 November of the same year, from Antwerp to Philadelphia. She remained on that route through March 1901, when she was placed on the American Line's Liverpool-Philadelphia service. (International Navigation Co. owned both the American and Red Star Lines, and ships of one line were often used on the other's routes.) She returned to Red Star's Antwerp-New York service from March 1906 through January 1907, and made her last Liverpool-Philadelphia trip for American in September 1908. Westernland was broken up in 1912.

Red Star Line steamship built 1883 at Birkenhead by Laird Bros. This ship mainly sailed with emigrants and other passengers on the route between Antwerp and New York.


This steamship was built by Laird Bros. of Birkenhead for Red Star Line. She weighed 5,212 gross tons, had a length of 400 feet and a beam of 47 feet, one funnel, four masts, and a single screw. Her service speed was 13 knots. There was accommodation for 63 first-class, 56 second-class, and 500 third-class (steerage) passengers.
Launched on 11 January 1883, she began her maiden voyage on 29 March 1884, sailing from Antwerp, Belgium to New York City. She began her last sailing on this service on 9 March 1901. She was then chartered to the American Line, with accommodations altered to carry 160 second-class and 500 third-class passengers. She began sailing a Liverpool-Philadelphia route in April 1901. Beginning on 28 March 1906, she made two round-trip voyages on the old Antwerp-New York route, then resumed service between Liverpool and Philadelphia. She made her last voyage in this service in 1908, and was scrapped later the same year.
