F-35B Lightning IIs with Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 211, 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit, conduct flight operations aboard the Wasp-class amphibious assault ship USS Essex (LHD 2). Essex is the flagship for the Essex Amphibious Ready Group and, with the embarked 13th MEU, is deployed to the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations in support of naval operations to ensure maritime stability and security in the Central Region, connecting the Mediterranean and the Pacific through the western Indian Ocean and three strategic choke points. Embarked aboard USS Essex (LHD 2) - Official, the U.S. Marine Corps F-35B Lightning II conducted its first combat strike in the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility today in support of Operation Freedom’s Sentinel in Afghanistan. During this mission, the F-35B conducted an air strike in support of ground clearance operations, and the strike was deemed successful by the ground force commander. (27.09.2018)
