80,000 Tonnes of Steel Ordered For New Aircraft Carriers
Contracts for the supply of 65 million pounds worth of steel, for the construction of the Royal Navy's two new aircraft carriers have been announced today, Tuesday 4 March 2008, by Minister for Defence Equipment and Support Baroness Taylor.
The supply of over 80,000 tonnes of steel from Corus for the manufacture of the two ships, with an estimated value of £65 million, is the same amount required for Heathrow Airport's Terminal 5 and three times that for Wembley Stadium.
Baroness Taylor also announced today another £8 million worth of contracts for other equipment to be used in the ships. These are:
- The supply of Blown Fibre Optic Cable Plant (BFOCP) technology for the installation of optical cables for data transfer within the ships at a cost in excess of £3 million; - Reverse osmosis equipment which will produce over 500 tonnes of fresh water daily for up to 1,450 personnel onboard the ships, valued at over £1 million; and - Aviation fuel systems equipment to allow the fuelling and de-fuelling of embarked aircraft at a contract value of approximately £4 million.
Baroness Taylor, said: "Today's announcement is a further signal of our commitment to the new aircraft carriers, which will be the nation's flagships. The construction of the carriers is good for British industry overall, bringing work not only to our principal shipyards but, as these contracts for over £70 million show, to other industries across the UK."
Project Team Leader, Rear Admiral Bob Love said: "We are delighted with the reaction we have had from industry in terms of their keenness to support this significant project. These orders take us further along the path to commencing build work within the yards."
Contracts for supply of steel plates and bulb flats have been awarded to Corus (with UK sites in Scunthorpe, Teesside and Motherwell) and Dent Steel Services (Yorkshire) Ltd. The vast majority of steel tonnage (90% or more) will be produced in the UK with some smaller quantities being produced in Europe. Dent Steel Services will be providing warehousing, as well as shot-blasting and painting services.
A contract for the supply of Blown Fibre Optic Cable Plant (BFOCP) technology has been awarded to Brand-Rex Limited based at Glenrothes, Fife, Scotland. Brand-Rex has chosen to work with long standing partner, Alfred-McAlpine - IT Services, based in Glasgow, who will provide project management and installation services.
A contract for the supply of reverse osmosis equipment has been awarded to Salt Separation Services with the work being carried out in Rochdale, Lancashire.
A contract for the supply of Aviation Fuel Systems Equipment has been awarded to Fluid Transfer International with the work being carried out in Nailsworth, Gloucestershire.
The Future Carrier Project
The UK is procuring two new Aircraft Carriers for the Royal Navy - HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince Of Wales. The carriers will be the biggest and most powerful surface warships ever constructed for the Royal Navy and will deliver an increased strategic effect and influence around the world.
The ships will be delivered by the Aircraft Carrier Alliance (ACA) - an innovative alliance comprising industry participants and MOD - in which MOD acts as both client and participant. For the manufacture phase the industrial participants will be: the BAES/VT planned Joint Venture, Thales, Babcock and BAES (Surface Ships & Insyte).

Aircraft Lifts Ordered For New Navy Carriers
A contract for the manufacture of aircraft lifts for the Royal Navy’s two new 65,000 tonne carriers was announced today by Defence Minister Baroness Ann Taylor.
The £13M contract, awarded to MacTaggart Scott of Loanhead, Scotland, means MoD orders for equipment, materials and infrastructure for the two ships, HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales, now total more than £160M.
Baroness Taylor, Minister for Defence Equipment and Support, said: “The aircraft lifts order announced today and the other equipment and steel already contracted are a clear demonstration of the steady progress towards commencing building work at the shipyards. Construction of the carriers will provide jobs for thousands of people across the UK, which is only fitting given that these ships will be a key element of our nation’s defences.”
MoD Defence Equipment and Support carrier project team leader Rear Admiral Bob Love said: “Each of the carriers will have two huge lifts, which can lift 70 tonnes each - or two Joint Strike Fighters - from hangar to flight deck in 60 seconds. They are so powerful that together they could lift the weight of the entire ship’s crew (1,450 people). We are working closely with industry participants as we move towards building these ships.”
The lifts and their associated motors and hydraulic machinery have been designed using established technologies to provide excellent reliability throughout the expected operating life of the carriers, up to 50 years.

£235M Contracts Propel Carrier Project Forward
The Ministry of Defence has placed £235m of contracts with industry to provide power and propulsion equipment for the new Royal Navy aircraft carriers it was confirmed today, Monday 6 October 2008.
At 65,000 tonnes each, HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales will be among the world's largest warships and the latest contracts will deliver the carriers' gas turbines, generators, motors, power distribution equipment, platform management systems, propellers, shafts, steering gear, rudders and stabilisers.
Simultaneously, the key industrial suppliers involved have co-operated to form an alliance that will ensure the equipment is integrated into the ships in the most cost effective manner.
Defence Minister Baroness Taylor said: "This is a significant milestone in the aircraft carrier project as the systems to power and propel these huge vessels through the water, come together.
"From Fife to Falmouth, contractors around the UK are involved in not only this element of the project but right across the whole design and build programme, drawing on the top skills the country has to offer to deliver this important new capability in support of our Armed Forces' front line operations."
Each carrier's two propellers will be driven by an electric motor making them the largest warships in the world to use electric rather than mechanical drive technology. The motors allow the diesel and gas turbine driven generators that power them to be located high in the ship, freeing valuable space in the hull and providing greater resilience to battle damage.
At the forefront of the electric propulsion technology that will drive the Fleet's new carriers are Scots based companies Rolls Royce in Fife and Converteam in Glasgow.
Rolls Royce's Dalgety Bay facilty will benefit from a £13m contract to provide rudders and stabilisers which steer the ship and keep it level. Overall, Rolls Royce's share of the latest carrier contracts is £96m.
Power conversion specialists Converteam will be providing the electric equipment which controls and monitors the power for the propulsion system and motors, under a contract worth £26m. This involves making medium voltage switchboards, electric converters, and filters.
Two state of the art gas turbines for each ship will be built in Bristol, producing 70 mega watts (MW) of power and will be coupled to generators to be built in Rugby. Combined with the diesel engines already on order, they will supply the 109 MW of electricity each carrier needs to move through the water at speeds sufficient for launch and recovery of aircraft and to power services such as lighting, cooking and heating; that's enough energy to supply a town the size of Swindon.
MOD Defence Equipment and Support Director General Ships, Rear Admiral Bob Love, said: "The new carriers represent a series of firsts for the Fleet and this latest propulsion technology has not yet been seen in the Royal Navy on this scale. This is a step change in the way our ships are powered and, as well as boosting capacity, will significantly improve fuel efficiency enabling uninterrupted long distance deployments and reducing running costs."
