En 10 jours, le nouvel avion de combat de l’US Navy a réalisé plus de 200 appontages et catapultages sur le porte-avions USS Nimitz. Alors que le F-35C s’est posé pour la toute première fois en mer le 3 novembre, hier soir, la marine américaine et Lockheed Martin comptabilisaient déjà 100 catapultages et 102 appontages pour cette première campagne d’essais sur porte-avions, qui se déroule au large de San Diego, sur la côte ouest des Etats-Unis.

Un porte-avions de la 2e guerre, le USS Independance, découvert intact au large de la Californie

L’épave intacte du porte-avions USS Independence datant de la Seconde guerre mondiale et qui a participé à la bataille du Pacifique, a été localisée au large de la Californie, a annoncé jeudi l’Agence américaine océanique et atmosphérique (NOAA).

Le bâtiment, qui git par près de 800 mètres de fond près des îles Farallon situées à environ 40 km de San Francisco, est « étonnamment intact » avec sa coque et son pont d’envol très visibles ainsi que ce qui paraît être un avion dans le hangar du navire, ont souligné les scientifiques de la NOAA.

L’Independence (CVL 22) était en opération dans le centre et l’ouest du Pacifique entre novembre 1943 et août 1945. Plus tard, il a été l’un des plus de 90 navires disposés dans le cadre d’une flotte cible pour des essais d’explosion de bombe atomique sur l’Atoll de Bikini dans les Iles Marshall...
